What are CVC words?
CVC
Consonant-Vowel-Consonant
Example: bat, tom, bib, hem, gum etc
They are also called short vowel words or three- letter words.
What are word families?
Word families are groups of words that have a common pattern or groups of letters with the same sound. For example, Ben, den, hen, men, pen, ten, yen, zen etc. falls under the ‘en’ word family/
Word belonging to the same family are also rhyming words.
In this set, there are five word families worksheets, one for each vowel.


Vowel sound ‘a’
The ‘a’ word families at, ap, ad, ag, am, ag and an are given. We have to cut and sort the pictures based on their word family. For example, bat and rat will fall under the -at word family.
In the above worksheet, the ‘e’ word families et, en, ell, eg and eck are given. We have to cut and sort the pictures based on their word family. For example, hen and den will fall under the -en word family.
The ‘i’ word families it, ip, ill, ig, ib and in are given. We have to cut and sort the pictures based on their word family. For example, wig and dig will fall under the -ig word family.
The ‘o’ word families ot, ock, od, og, ob and op are given. We have to cut and sort the pictures based on their word family. For example, jog and log will fall under the -og word family.


Vowel sound ‘u’
Similarly, for short vowel’u’ the child has to stick picture under its word family. The families are up, ut, ub, ud, ug and um.
Understanding patterns enables fluency. Children are not required to sound out each individual letter but instead be able to recognize the pattern quickly.
