Have you ever wondered why our names, names of schools or hospitals or holidays or months of the year or days of the week begin with a capital letter?

For example, agastya or Agastya?

Lotus Valley School or lotus valley school?

Apollo Hospitals or apollo hospitals?

january or January?

sunday or Sunday?

deepawali or Deepawali?

All of the above refers to someone or something specific or particular so, they will begin with a capital letter.

Agastya is a boy. A boy is a common noun but Agastya is the name of a particular boy so it is a proper noun. It will begin with a capital letter.

A school is a place. A school is a common noun but Lotus Valley School is the name of a specific school and therefore a proper noun.

Hospital is a place. A hospital is a common noun but Apollo Hospitals names a specific hospital and thus is a proper noun. A month is a common noun but January is a specific month of the year so it is a proper noun. January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December are all proper nouns and always begin with a capital letter.

A day is a common noun but Sunday refers to a particular day of the week and therefore is a proper noun. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday are all proper nouns and always begin with a capital letter.

A festival is a common noun but Deepawali names a particular festival and is, therefore, a proper noun. All festivals like Christmas, Dussehra, Eid, etc. always begin with a capital letter.

Furthermore, we have brands like Nike, Samsung, Philips, Louis Vuitton, etc. which also begin with a capital letter because they name a specific brand. All brand names begin with a capital letter.

My dog’s name, Murphy begins with a capital letter. Dog is a common noun but Murphy is a proper noun.

I hope the concept is clear to you now.

The next nouns worksheet helps to differentiate between common and proper nouns. The easiest way to differentiate is, of course, seeing what begins with a capital letter and what does not but that will not always be the case.

For e.g. Mom went to the market. What are the common and proper nouns in this sentence? Market is a common noun but ‘Mom’? ‘Mom’ begins with a capital letter but it can be any mom, right? It does not name the ‘Mom’. ‘Mom’ is, therefore, a common noun. It begins with a capital letter because it is the first word of the sentence.

Common nouns- book, girl, school, and tiger

Proper nouns- Lord Shiva, Barbie, Pathways, Mars, and Delhi
