Vocabulary Pack 2
Speaking fluent English is important and so are spellings but there is another aspect which is equally important. It is important for children to use a variety of words to express themselves. Vocabulary makes our language-rich.
Vocabulary is all the words known and used by a particular person. A rich vocabulary or knowledge of words makes the text more structured and attractive. It is important that from a young age, we encourage children to be thoughtful about the words that they use. Once that interest is generated it will continue throughout their school life and into adulthood.

Let us discuss the vocabulary words building worksheets.
Compound words are two or more words put together to form a new word with a new meaning.
dust + pan = dustpan
pin + prick = pinprick
It is one of the best ways to introduce children to longer words and also add to their vocabulary words bank. Children usually know the meaning of ‘dust’ and ‘pan’ but compound words introduce them to a new word ‘dustpan’ which has a totally new meaning thus enhancing vocabulary.
For compound words, anchor charts, and puzzles, check this post.
The above worksheet is about sorting related words. The child has to cross out the word that is not related.
Example: hut apartment bungalow villa boat
,All the words are about places where we can live except for boat.
The next exercise is dropping a letter from a given word to form a new word with a new meaning.
Example: drain – we remove the ‘d’ from drain and we get ‘rain.’
A similie is a group of words that compares one thing to another.
My sister swims like a fish.
Her children are as sweet as pie.
Using similie is a beautiful way of expressing something. It adds more meaning and richness to the text.
Homographs are words that are spelled the same as another word but have a different meaning.
Example: tear
I saw her tear all the bills.
The boy shed a tear as his grandparents got ready to leave.
Tear has two different meanings and is a homograph.
