We often come across words like fur, burn, curl, turf, lurch, etc. The common sound in these words is the ur sound. When u is followed by r, it no longer remains a short vowel. The Bossy R following it forces it to change its sound. An r-controlled vowel is one that is immediately followed by the letter ‘r’ and which can no longer be pronounced as a long or short vowel.
When the letter r follows a vowel, the vowel is usually forced to change its sound. That is why it is also called the ‘BOSSY R.’
In this post, we will be discussing words with the ur sound.
When the ‘u’ is followed by r, it makes the sound you hear in the words purr, urn, fur, murky, turn, etc.
These r controlled words with pictures flashcards can also be used with dyslexic children to practice reading r-controlled words. I especially created these flashcards for special education.
These flashcards can add fun to your lessons. They can also be used when revisiting the sounds.
