sh sh.. consonant digraph ‘sh’ is here! Pack I
We often come across words like shed, shock, shin, ship, shop, shack, cash, wish, flesh, shut, shrub, dish, hush, etc. All these words have the ‘sh’ sound. ‘sh’ is a consonant digraph.
What are consonant digraphs?
Consonants are all letters in the alphabet apart from the vowels a, e, i, o, and u.
b c d f g h j k l m n p q r s t v w x y z are consonants
A digraph is two letters that make just one sound.
A consonant digraph is two adjacent consonants that produce one sound.
s and h are two consonants that come together to form a new sound, the /sh/ sound.
I usually tell children that when ‘s’ and ‘h’ come together, they form a new sound, /sh/.
Today, I will be sharing the first pack for digraph sh sound words.
The first is a read and color worksheet. You will read words that begin with sh. The ‘sh words’ are in a large font and can be colored. I would suggest coloring only sh sound in each word so that the child understands that these two letters are read together.
The next worksheet is a fun sticking activity for words beginning with sh. There are pictures and letter tiles. The child has to spell the word using the letter tiles and stick them under the pictures. The words are shop, ship, shut, and shed.
Alternatively, the child can also write the word. Do try my ‘ch sound words worksheet‘ pack too.
The above worksheet is a word bank for words that end with the sh sound. Color only the /sh/ sound so that the child understands that two letters are making one sound.
Now, let’s spell a few words ending with sh. Kids are going to love this activity. The words are lash, mesh, hush, and wish.
By now our little learners must be comfortable with the sh sound. This is a read, match, and paste sh sound words worksheet.
Trace or color the /sh/ word and match it to the picture in the above worksheet. You can color the pictures too!
The next worksheet is a word sort activity for words beginning and ending with sh. These simple sh words will give the child a good reading practice.
Read the word bank and write ‘sh words.’ Color the pictures!
In this worksheet, the child has to form sh sentences. There is a picture and a few scrambled words. Unscramble the words to form a sentence. Write it in four lines.
Do not forget to try the digraph th words worksheets.
The last ‘sh words puzzle’ worksheet is a kid’s favorite. There are six pictures that need to be cut along with the letters. Cut along the dotted line too. Now give your child three tiles for the first word and let him form the picture and read the word under it.
I make the kids stick word puzzles in their notebooks. We stick one puzzle and write a simple sentence containing that word. For e.g. Shut the door. I have a big shell. Mom has a shop. Dad is in the shed. That is my shin etc.
The Pack is free for subscribers to download.
