s-blend words – Read, match and paste
Today, we will be covering the last of the initial consonant blends, the s blends. The pack includes sc sk sn sm sp st and sw blends. I have also included the ‘tw’ blend in this pack. All the s blend words are short vowel words.
I start with consonant blends immediately after CVC words or three-letter words. We cover digraph sh, ch and th too during this period.
Blends are also called chunks or clusters.
Let us discuss the picture sort pack for s blends

sc and sk blends
The first worksheet is a picture sort worksheet for blends sc and sk words. Blends sc and sk have the same sound. Cut the picture tiles. Let the child read the words. Blends can be confusing for children. You can ask the child to highlight the blends sk and sc while reading the words. The child will be able to read easily and also quickly.
Next of the s blends is the sm blend. In these worksheets, you can find words that you haven’t heard before. My aim is to introduce new words since children have a tendency to cram the words they see often. Reading new words will assure you that the child has understood the concept. Also, it adds to the vocabulary.

sn blend- read, match and paste
The next worksheet is for the ‘sn’ words. Children often confuse sm- and sn- blends. You can keep some gap between these two blends when practicing them with the child.
I have created an addictive game to read and practice s-blend words with children. Do try it.

sp blend- read, match and paste
The s-blends can be a little challenging for the kids. Sometimes, kids do not catch the s in the words. spit is pronounced pit, spot is pronounced pot. In such cases, please practice the ‘s’ sound again. Stretch the sssssss which is the hissing sound of the snake. Do it regularly. sssssssss-pot, ssssssss-pin..slowly, the child will get it. Then you can try saying sp at once.

st blend- read, match and paste
You can also practice blends with things around you. For example, the st words- try teaching it with common words like star, stove, statue etc.

sw and tw blend- read, match and paste
In this worksheet, I have both the sw and tw words. It is a good idea to study them together. After these cut and paste worksheets, I suggest you try my ‘s blends’ pack of worksheets which is a mix of all the s-blends.
