Let’s look at the image above. In this short vowel word family, the last two letters are the same for all words. It is the ap words family. Map, tap, nap, gap, and cap all belong to the same family ‘ap.’ Also, all the words rhyme with each other. All we have to do is change the first letter to form a new word. This helps the child understand patterns. ‘ap’ is common for all the five words but a change in the beginning sound changed the word and its meaning.
Understanding patterns enables fluency. Children are not required to sound out each individual letter but instead be able to recognize the pattern quickly.
