long vowels and short vowels

What are short vowel sounds?

Vowel sounds that are pronounced in a short form are short vowel sounds. You can hear the short vowel sound in words like ‘tat’ ‘tet’ ‘tit’ ‘tot’ ‘tut.’

What are long vowel sounds?

A long vowel is a vowel sound that is pronounced the same way as the letter itself. Long vowel sounds are also called alphabet sounds.

Example
The word ‘pan’ has a short /a/ sound, while the word pane has the long /a/ sound.

The word ‘ten’ has a short /e/ sound, while the word teen has the long /e/ sound.

The word ‘mitt’ has a short /i/ sound, while the word might has the long /i/ sound.

The word ‘rod’ has a short /o/ sound, while the word road has the long /o/ sound.

The word ‘tub’ has a short /u/ sound, while the word tube has the long /u/ sound.

It is important to learn how to discriminate between short vowels and long vowels. Initially, children tend to confuse the long and short sounds but with regular practice, they can overcome this confusion.
