Long vowels are used to refer to the vowel sounds whose pronunciation is the same as its letter name. Long vowel sounds are also called ‘alphabet sounds.’
They are called long vowel sounds because we hold them longer than short vowel sounds. But long vowels are not a longer version of short vowels. Long and short vowel sounds are completely different from each other.
Let’s take an example. Hear the sound of the vowel ‘e’ in the word met. It is the short vowel sound /e/.
Now hear the sound of ‘ee’ in the word meet. It makes the alphabet sound of the alphabet ‘e.’
Both sounds are completely different from each other. If you stretch the ‘e’ in met, you do not get the ‘ee’ in meet.
Hear the sound of ‘ea’ in meat. Meat has the long vowel ‘e’ sound.
I have a detailed pack of practice worksheets for ‘Long vowel e -ee and ea.’ You can download it from my blog.
For this post, I have created flashcards for ee and ea words.
These flashcards can also be used with dyslexic children to practice reading ee and ea words. These flashcards can add fun to your lessons. They can be used for a number of activities. These flashcards can also be used when revisiting the sounds.

To practice reading ‘ee words,’ I would recommend a storybook ‘Sheep in a Jeep.’ Beep! Beep! Sheep in a jeep on a hill that’s steep. Sheep in a Jeep is well-loved for its slapstick story of five sheep (in a jeep) and silly sound effects especially when the jeep goes splash and thud in the mud! It will make for a good kindergarten read.
The illustrations are hilarious. Children will love reading it again and again.

So, there are 10 letter paper format sheets with ee words flashcards. Each sheet has 4 flashcards. You will notice that the ee sound is highlighted in all the words. I do that so it’s easier for children to read.
The above sheet has six letter ee and ea words – screen, sneeze, wreath, and please.

There are 4 cards on each of the 10 letter paper format sheets with ea words. The ‘ea’ is highlighted in each word. You will need to print these sheets and cut them into cards. Print these picture cards on card stock and laminate them for durability.
Sort the words and write them in the above worksheet. These flashcards will also enhance your child’s vocabulary. Do use these words in sentences so children can understand the meanings of the words.
