CVC reading passages
Our kids have begun reading CVC words or three-letter words. It is a good time to introduce sight words so that kids can begin reading sentences. Once they are reading sentences, we move on to reading passages that focus on CVC words.
These short passages with CVC words focus on helping emergent readers to develop confidence and fluency, and also check comprehension. Children can use simple sight word knowledge and blending skills to enjoy these passages.
CVC words passages are well suited to shared reading, guided reading, and independent work, depending on the skill level of individual readers and the intent of the lesson.
The first passage is for ‘CVC words for short vowel a.’ The title is ‘Pam and Dad.’ Read the passage at least three times. The child reads the passage and colors a star. The passages include sight words.
I highly recommend these secret sentences worksheets. They are fun and interesting and a great tool for reading CVC words, sight words, and simple sentences. You can download the worksheets free by clicking on the image above.
‘Meg and Ben’ focuses on CVC e words. Highlight all the CVC e words as you read the passage. You can also circle the CVC e words. Then based on the text, children will complete the exercise. This little exercise will encourage our little readers to think about what they have read. As parents and teachers, it helps us know if the child has understood the passage.
‘Jin and Lin’ CVC words passage focus on CVC i words. Highlight the CVC words with short vowel i. Read the passage three times, complete the sentences, and color the pictures.
The next CVC reading comprehension is for short vowel o words. ‘Bob the fox’ is the title of the comprehension. Read the passage and highlight the CVC o words. It will be a good idea for teachers and parents to cover important sight words in the passage before the child begins to read. Words like the, are, eat, then, etc. can be introduced to the child.
The last CVC reading comprehension is for short vowel u words. ‘Rum and Bud’ focuses on CVC u words. Highlight the CVC u words as you read the passage. Complete the sentences based on the text.
