Write the beginning and ending sounds for the CVC words pack (aeiou)
Our topic for today is the blending and segmenting of sounds. They are the opposite of each other. I will be sharing CVC words a e i o u worksheets for beginning and ending sounds.
Blending phonics sounds- It is the process of saying the individual sounds in a word and then stringing them together to make the word.
p-i-t ——–> pit
Segmenting phonics sounds- It is the process of breaking words down into individual sounds.
cat ———–> c-a-t
In segmenting, the child breaks the word ‘cat’ into its component sounds, c-a-t. Recognizing, listening, and understanding these letter sounds gives your child the best start in their spelling level skills.
If you would like to focus only on ending sounds, do check these free worksheets for ending sounds.

In the worksheet above, the middle sound is ‘e’ which is given. The child has to identify the pictures and fill in the beginning and ending sounds. For this to happen, the child will have to segment the sounds in the CVC words.
This is the worksheet for short vowel ‘i’. To write the beginning and ending sounds for pig, the child has to segment the three sounds first.
p-i-g ————-> pig
Segmenting the sounds can be a slow process for the child. One just has to constantly keep practicing it with the child. You can stress the sounds that the child is not getting or you can try an activity which I am sharing below.

Magnetic board
I often use this magnetic board which I bought from here.
The board is a small magnetic slate that comes with alphabets in uppercase (I purchased the lowercase alphabets separately from here) and numbers.
If we have to form the word ‘log’, I give the child those three magnetic letters, and then the child tries it on the slate. The sounds are in front of the child so it’s easier to form the word. Also, children enjoy this activity. I like to practice this activity before we try any CVC worksheets.
I also use this board to practice beginning sounds. There are so many ways in which it can be used.
To try phonics word families with your child, check these free word family activity cards.
The answers are provided in the pack on a separate sheet.
These worksheets can be complemented with a fun and addictive CVC words game which is a great way to practice reading CVC words.
This pack is a subscriber freebie.
